I brought Juliet to see the Nutcracker. I remember seeing it as a little girl, and I've seen it a few times in my adulthood. It's awesome... and in my eyes Christmas isn't Christmas without it.
It was performed by the Alberta Ballet and only in the city for 5 days. We attended the first weekend matinee... along with every other mother & daughter this side of the equator. For every adult there was a little girl in a christmas dress.. or princess dress as Juliet calls them. Here's my Nutcracker Princess..
Juliet loves that stuff. She will sit through anything and be awed. So I knew she would love it. What I didn't know, was that she'd spend the first act more worried about the lights going out then what was actually going on on stage. Although she didn't miss any of the dancing... she did spend the better part of the first act hiding under her blanket. And Juliet made very sure that everyone around us knew she was afraid that they would 'turn out the lights'. The innocence of a 3 year old... she doesn't really understand the concept of whispering and that not everyone needs to hear about the Nutcracker through Juliet's eyes. She asked a question for almost every pirouette, grand jété & pas de deux. Oh and thank you Alberta Ballet for not making the rat king and any of your rats scary... that would have just put her over the top.
The second act went by much better... not to say that the first wasn't good... it was fantastic. Juliet simply got over her fear of darkness for the 2nd act and "didn't need her mama (blanket) anymore" and wanted to "sit in her own seat". Too bad she couldn't see. My lap was the best place to be... which makes me wonder why I had to buy Juliet a ticket if they couldn't even supply enough booster seats to accommodate all the children... On the advice of my grandmother I'm going to write a letter about that. Anyway... all in all it was a grand success and we LOVED it. I have to say thanks to my mom & grandmother for raising me with traditions that I am now able to share with my own children. Love you.
